SAN-A’s Sustainability Vision

The history of our company goes back to 1950 when the founder opened a small general store on Miyakojima Island in Okinawa Prefecture. In 1970, we expanded our business to the main island of Okinawa and opened the first SAN-A store, a clothing supermarket, in Naha-City. With a strong determination and sense of mission to enrich the lives of the Okinawan people, we have keenly sensed changes in the times and the needs of our customers, expanding our business domains to also include food and groceries, restaurants, home appliances, and pharmaceuticals.

In recent years, global warming and other environmental problems like deforestation and soil and marine pollution have become increasingly serious. We believe companies have a key role to play in tackling these issues. Thus far, we have undertaken a number of initiatives. We have been collecting milk cartons and food trays at our stores, recycling waste paper at some locations, installing solar panels at our stores, switching to environmentally friendly refrigerator and freezer showcases, and promoting the use of reusable shopping bags in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In April 2022, we established a Sustainability Committee to further strengthen our initiatives. Going forward, we will examine the global environmental issues that are most familiar to us all, including efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, food loss, and plastic waste, and take steps to address them as a matter of priority.

We believe that our role, which has evolved together with Okinawa over many years, is to find the optimal balance between contributing to Okinawa Prefecture and achieving growth of the Company. We have set our sights on being a company that is genuinely trusted in society and we are committed to achieving happiness for our customers, our employees, and the local community and environment.
